Maghera
Maghera is a busy and thriving Northern Ireland town. The town is the local commercial centre for the surrounding villages, such as Swatragh, Tobermore, Upperlands, Gulladuff and Knockcloghrim. Furthermore, Maghera is the educational centre for the surrounding area. St. Patrick’s is located here and provides one of the largest schools in Mid-Ulster. Apart from being a busy contemporary hub, Maghera also has a proud and important history.
Within the town is St. Lurach’s Church. Having been originally founded as a monastery, it dates back from the 6th Century. Whats more, this was an important monastery for it was a Bishop’s seat in the 12th and 13th Centuries. However, the modern day has saw the Church fall into disrepair and can now be viewed as a roofless ruin. Nonetheless, St. Lurach’s is a site of major architectural significance in Ireland. Contained within the ruins, as an insert to the West wall is a sculpture of the crucifixion, which is thought to date from the 10th Century – making it one of the oldest in Ireland. The details of the sculpture can still be seen, with the ruins being open to the public. Finally, if you wish to find out more about the history of this Church, here is a good blog.
