The most effective way to travel between Dungannon and Cookstown is by car or bus. There is currently no train service between these towns. Likely, the last train to ever run from Dungannon to Cookstown or vice versa was sometime in February 1965. The Dungannon railway station once served the local towns in Tyrone. When the Great Northern Railway took over in 1876, it built a branch line between Dungannon and Cookstown. In recent years, there has been speculation about reviving railway lines in the future. Plans have been laid to reopen the Dungannon line and connect it to the railway station in Portadown.
